The Kremlin

The Kremlin glitters in the heart of Moscow. It thrills and tantalizes whenever you see its towers against the skyline or its cathedrals and palaces arrayed above the Moska River. The Kremlin is surrounded by a beautiful residential district that is known as the Belvy Gorod or the White Town. The Belvy Gorod was the very heart of the city during the sixteenth century, and even today it has a strongly medieval feel. A unique of art and history museums and architectural monument of Sobornaya (Cathedral) Square with Uspensky (Assumption), Arkhangelsky (Archangel) and Blagoveshchensky (Annunciation) Cathedrals and the Patriarch΄s Palace. The museums house unique specimens of historical monuments and church art. In the Armoury one can see the richest collection of ancient weaponry, czar΄s and patriarchs΄ regalia, jewelry, and much more. Since time immemorial the Moscow Kremlin has been the centre of Russian statehood, the residence of Russian tsars and hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church. At the beginning of the 18th century, Peter I transferred the capital of Russian to St.Petersburg, however, according to tradition, the Russian tsars were coronated in Moscow. In 1917 the Soviet government transferred the Russian capital back to Moscow. The Kremlin has been the residence of the President of the Russian Federation and his Administration since 1992. The Kremlin has been and remains a unique monument of Russian culture and a symbol of Russian statehood.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

St.Basil’s cathedral, or the Cathedral of the Intercession, as it is called officially, was constructed in 1560 by the order of Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the liberation from the Tatar-Mongol domination. It was built over the grave of the well-known holy man named Basil; that name was finally given to the cathedral complex. Today cathedral is a museum containing an exhibition dedicated to the history of its construction. It contains the icon stand of the Trinity Church and the famous icon “Entry into Jerusalem”.
